Sands Knitting Challenge

Sands knitting and crochet challenge

I’ve committed to crocheting a blanket for a very loved and much missed baby.

Sands were so supportive when we lost our daughter and having a blanket for her meant so much to us. I want to pay this forward for another family.
Losing a baby is heartbreaking and Sands do so much good and are a place of solace for all family members in such times. They make sure you're not alone in your pain. I don't know how I would have survived emotionally without the support they offered.

Sands ensure that everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times. They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby.
Anything you are able to donate means so much to me and to all the families who will benefit from the support and care they receive from Sands.
Thank you 💜

The second blanket

Wednesday 25th Mar
Number 2 has started well. 2 rows of single crochet and a row of doubles started. My hands are very cold so its slow going today

Blanket #1 complete

Tuesday 24th Mar
I just finished the first blanket, it needs blocking and then can be sent. I'm now contemplating what pattern to use for the 2nd.

What your donation can provide 💙

Tuesday 24th Mar
This came from an email I received just now and I thought it would be good to share here so everyone can see what their donation can do 🧡

Borders!

Tuesday 24th Mar
Im now doing a border around the blanket. I'll be doing more than one round but I don't know what final edge to give the blanket. When ive done a double crochet round the whole blanket I think I'll check to see what my options are. There's been so much counting!

The progress of the blanket

Wednesday 18th Mar
The progress has been slow the last couple of days as I've been coming down with a cold. I've noticed a couple of little mistakes that im going to fix when I've finished the skein of yarn and starting a new one.

The hook, the yarn and the pattern.

Saturday 14th Mar
I've had to replace the yarn provided in the pack as I found 100% acrylic wool was too awkward to work with. I'm now using a cotton blend yarn (50:50 cotton acrylic) with a 3.5 crochet hook. The yarn is "Knitcraft Cotton Blend" from Hobbycraft.

The first pattern is:
Row 1: sk 5 ch (4 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in next chain. *sk 4 ch, (4 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in next chain. Repeat pattern from * until 3 ch are left. sk 2 ch, dc in last ch. TURN.

Row 2: ch 3, *(4 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in next ch space. Repeat pattern across all ch spaces. dc in last dc

Row 3 et al: Repeat Row 2 until blanket is the desired length.

Sharing my Fundraiser

Saturday 14th Mar
Well, I'm setting off and I'm up and running. I'm doing this challenge with crochet instead of knitting. The pack arrived earlier this week. I found the right hook, then I started. We have a specific size to aim for when making the blankets for babies and they are to be plain white. I'm very new to crochet so I just hope they will be good enough.
