Sands Knitting Challenge

I’m taking on the Sands Crocheting Challenge 💜

In Loving Memory of Samuel (My Nephew) – A Sponsored Crochet for SANDS

This fundraiser is being held in loving memory of a truly remarkable little boy, Samuel – known so fondly as Sammy Sausage.

Samuel was born at just 24 weeks, weighing only 580 grams. Doctors explained that if he didn’t cry when he arrived, they would not be able to intervene. Against all odds, Samuel cried out with a strong little voice, and from that moment on, he showed the world how determined he was to stay. He was immediately intubated and began a journey that would inspire everyone who met him.

After less than a week at Burnley Hospital, Samuel was transferred to Manchester Children’s Hospital, where he spent nearly seven months on the NICU. Despite facing repeated infections caused by an undiagnosed issue with his spleen, Samuel continued to fight. His strength left medical teams amazed time and time again. Although his little body was often unwell, his mind thrived — alert, curious, and full of personality.

Samuel became a well-known and deeply loved presence on the unit. He was rarely seen without his beautiful crocheted hats and cosy blankets, lovingly made by me his Auntie Jo and he proudly earned the nickname Sammy Sausage — a true NICU legend.

Sadly, on 24th February 2019, Samuel passed away peacefully in the arms of his mum and dad. His tiny lungs could not keep up with the size of his brave little heart, which had worked so hard through every infection

In Samuel’s honour, I will be (Auntie Jo) undertaking a sponsored Crochet throughout the month of March, with the goal of crocheting as many blankets as i can. All of the blankets will be sent directly to SANDS, where they will be placed into memory boxes given to families who have lost a baby. These boxes often become treasured keepsakes, holding precious items and memories — and a soft, handmade blanket can offer a small sense of comfort during an unimaginable time.

All money raised will also be donated to SANDS, a charity that supports anyone affected by the death of a baby and works to improve care and save babies lives. We know that blankets and donations cannot make everything better — but the little things matter. A gentle touch, a meaningful keepsake, and the knowledge that someone cares can help families feel less alone in their grief.

As Dr. Seuss so perfectly said,

“A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

Samuel proved that every single day of his life.

Thank you for remembering Samuel, for supporting this fundraiser, and for helping his love and legacy live on — wrapped in warmth, kindness, and compassion. 🧶💙

They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby. Anything you are able to donate means so much.

Thankyou so much for your support.

Sunday 22nd Feb

Here’s Jo doing what she does best — hook in hand and already making magic happen. The crochet has officially begun (early), and it’s so lovely to see those first stitches coming together.

Each row is a small act of love that will become a blanket for a little one who needs it. That’s what this challenge is all about — creating something meaningful together for Sands Charity. 🧶✨

In memory of our sweet Sam, I’m proud to sponsor these baby blankets made by his Auntie. Even during Sam’s short life, she was always there—through the tough times and the happy ones. Every blanket she makes is filled with love, care, and a little bit of Sam’s memory. Xxx
