I’m running 50k in May for families facing baby loss

I'm running 50k in May for every much-loved baby sadly not here today.

My first child, Billy, was born prematurely almost 7 years ago. Billy lived for just one very special but heartbreaking day. In the months that followed Sands did so much to support and connect us to other families suffering with similar loss.  I will forever be grateful for this and know that the charity relies on donations to continue it's important work. So, on with the running shoes and off I go, running in my particular old lady style!! Please support if you can, thank you xx

Sands ensure that everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times. They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby. Anything you are able to donate means so much.

Thank you.

My Updates

Oh dear....

Wednesday 13th May
I'm not quite sure what possessed me to make the bold and darn well silly statement that if I reached my £1000 target I'd increase my running target to 75k. Could have been a moment of madness...perhaps the gin and tonic... Either way too many people have noticed that I said that now to take it back. I was just in the pub with some friends (so I thought) explaining my conundrum and how I was scarily close to hitting that target (£18). I come home to find an anonymous donation of, you've guessed it, £18. Joker!        Yes, I will now attempt to run 75k. Wish me luck 🤞 (and thank you everyone, even you know who, for your most generous and kind donations)

Half way!!

Monday 11th May
I'm half way!! Today I ran another 5k taking me to the half way point of my 50k challenge. I'm delighted with all your support towards the work of Sands, such a valuable charity to so many bereaved parents. Thank you!

If I reach my fundraising goal of £1,000 I will increase my distance target to 75K....eeeeek

The best support Sands gave me was through the forum- I met one woman, Ali, who was going through the death of her child Skye, at the same time as me. We messaged each other several times a week for over a year, supporting one another through the grief and then the anxiety when we both became pregnant with our second child. This knowledge that I was not alone and had someone else to connect with who knew some of what I was experiencing kept me afloat through the dark times, and I'm so grateful for that connection. thank you Ali, thank you Sands.

Why am I doing this?

Friday 1st May
After waking up at 4:00 a.m. to go and dance the sun up on Haytor with my Morris dancing side (Beltane Border) I wasn't much in the mood for a run today.

Lately running has felt more difficult. I've been running less often, doing shorter, slower runs. This has coincided with a sadness that has been creeping in, as it has tended to at this time of year since my son Billy died, the day after he was born.

I was about to give up trying to be a runner when I saw the advert from Sand's - run 50k in May - and somehow I found myself signing up.

It feels like a positive and encouraging way to remember Billy whilst raising money for such a wonderful charity who helps so many parents who have experienced baby loss.

Thank you for supporting me in this challenge xx

Off I go!

Friday 1st May
First run of Ma(n)y Very hard start, after a 4am start for me, dancing the sun up on Haytor, but I did my first 5k. Phew.
