Baby Sheppards Poem

Thursday 1st Jan

At Baby Sheppard’s funeral, I read a poem that I wrote for him. It’s still one of the most personal things I’ve ever written, and I want to share it here, because this challenge,  these runs, are for him.

Dear Baby Sheppard
You’re our biggest achievement
Our beautiful son
Charlies your dad
& I am your mum

Lady is your sister the furriest kind
You would have been best friends
I can picture it in my mind

I wish you could have come home
I wish you’d survived
In our little family you would have thrived

Life feels a bit empty
The future seems bleak
The days they keep passing by week by week

I hope you’re at peace
Our beautiful son
And I hope there’s no pain wherever you’ve gone

We’ll carry you with us, wherever we go
You’ll be in our hearts always I want you to know

We’ll remember you in happy times whilst we’re having fun
In all of the beauty; the rainbows, the waterfalls, the stars and setting of the sun

We’ll plant an apple tree in memory of you
Which we can come and visit if we’re feeling sad & blue

If there are other children we’ll tell them of you
Their big brother born sleeping before he was due

Your tiny fingers, the littlest toes,
the face of an angel your button nose

We’ll love you forever our beautiful son
And we’ll all be together when our lives on earth are done

Sweet dreams our baby, rest easy in peace
We’ll treasure you forever there will be no release

Until we meet again our beautiful son
When we see you again and our hearts will be one.

Baby Sheppard - doing something in his name

Thursday 1st Jan

I’m writing this as Baby Sheppard’s mum.

We lost our beautiful baby boy in 2022, and although time has passed, the love, the grief, and the ache of missing him are still very much part of who I am. Becoming his mum changed me forever, even though I never got to bring him home.

Since losing Baby Sheppard, Charlie and I have been welcomed into the baby loss community, a community no one ever chooses to be part of, yet one filled with the bravest, kindest people I have ever met. We have heard so many heartbreaking stories, each one a reminder that baby loss touches far too many families. It’s something that stays with you, quietly woven into everyday life.

Charlie has done so much in Baby Sheppard’s memory. He plays football for Baby Loss United, he has fundraised, and he is currently training to run a half marathon in 2026. I am so incredibly proud of him. Until now, though, I haven’t personally done a sponsored event for baby loss. Lately, I’ve felt a strong pull to do something myself something that feels manageable, meaningful, and true to me as his mum.

That’s why this January, I’m going to run 2km every day for SANDS.

SANDS is a charity that supports anyone affected by the death of a baby, and their work means so much to families like ours. I know friends and family have already sponsored Charlie so generously over the years, and I know he still needs sponsorship for his marathon. Because of that, I’m not asking for big donations. Instead, I’m setting a small, achievable goal.

If everyone who knows me could sponsor just £1, it would help me reach my £50 target, and I would be so incredibly grateful. Every single pound means something, not just financially, but emotionally. It feels like Baby Sheppard is being remembered, his life acknowledged, his name spoken.

Running 2km a day won’t change what happened, and it won’t fill the space Baby Sheppard left behind but it feels like a way to honour him. A way to turn grief into something purposeful. A way to support other parents who are running a path they never expected to be on.

Thank you for reading and remembering Baby Sheppard and all the babies gone to soon 💙🦋💙
