Run 2k a Day in February 2026

I’m running 2k a day in Febuary for families facing baby loss

I’ve committed to running 2k a day this February for every much-loved baby sadly not here today.

Sands ensure that everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times. They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby. Anything you are able to donate means so much.

Thank you.

Some Statistics

Monday 16th Feb
Well it's been just over 2 weeks since I started my Sands 2k a day challenge and thought I better give an update and remind everyone of what's going on.

For those who don't know, I'm raising money for Sands - baby loss charity by taking part in their 2K a day challenge throughout February. So far, my running buddy Oscar and I have done just short of 57km compared to a target of 32km.

I thought I'd give a few statistics to give my challenge some perspective.
- According to the ONS there were 594,677 live births in the UK in 2024
- Around 1 in 5 or 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage (Miscarriage being loss before 24 weeks). Using the above figure, this calculates as 148,669 miscarriages in 2024 in the UK, with 2 of those being our own (594,677*1.25 = 743,346 total pregnancies, 743,346 - 594,677 = 148,669)
- About 80% of miscarriages occur in the first 12 weeks
- Recurrent miscarriages (i.e. suffering 3 or more consecutive miscarriages) affects about 1 in 100 couples
- For 50% of women who suffer recurrent miscarriages, no cause is found

Abi Gill and I found all of these statistics applying to us. 3 losses and no explanations. The pain and despair in that situation is immense and the most common medical advice in this situation is chin up, better luck next time, don't give up.

I get these things happen, but given the sheer scale, its incredulous that things are still like this. I'd wager that everyone will know someone that has suffered miscarriage (and if you think you don't, you do, you just haven't been told).

This is obviously a hugely personal challenge for myself. I've focused on miscarriages here as that's our experience. These numbers don't even touch on neo-natal death, still-birth or Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy. Hopefully now you get a sense of the scale of what's happening.

Sands - baby loss charity work to support those who have suffered baby loss. Whether through training for workplaces in how to handle baby loss, providing a memory box to bereaved parents or providing a place to turn when it all just feels too much.

I've a couple more weeks left until the end of the challenge, and I'd really appreciate it if you are able to, if you could make a donation

Thank you so much to those that have already donated. I will try to post more on this as I keep going. Even if it's just cute pictures of Oscar out running with me
