I’m running daily in January for families facing baby loss

I’ve committed to running daily this January for every much-loved baby sadly not here today.

Sands ensure that everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times. They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby. Anything you are able to donate means so much.

Thank you.

What happens after…

Saturday 24th Jan
When a baby dies, everything happens at once. The clothes and blankets are no longer needed to keep them warm, yet you still wash them, dress them, wrap them, and hold them. You do the only things left that make you a parent. In those moments, you don’t think about what makes the support possible. You don’t see the charities who provide the casts of tiny hands and feet, or the memory boxes that hold hospital tags, a lock of hair, a toy, the pieces of a life that should have been longer. This is where your donations go. They make sure that, in the most broken moments of someone’s life, there is care, dignity, and something to hold onto. They help families create memories they never knew they would need, but will keep forever. If you feel able, donations to Sands are still very much welcome. 🤍

The roadmap of grief

Sunday 18th Jan

Most of us do not reach adulthood untouched by loss. It is the quiet truth that runs beneath our lives: everything that begins must, one day, end. And sometimes that ending comes far too soon , abrupt, unforgiving, and utterly disorienting. We may know, in theory, that this is possible, yet nothing prepares us for the shock when love is taken before its time.

I write this thinking of family, friends, colleagues, people who wake up one day to find the map of their life has been redrawn without their consent. The future they were walking toward disappears, and they are left navigating unfamiliar ground, carrying a weight they never imagined they would have to bear. Often, they stumble. Sometimes, they fall completely apart.

If you have ever been there, you know how lonely it can feel.

This is why charities like this exist. Because grief does not arrive neatly, and healing does not happen alone. Because when the crash comes, and in some form, it comes for us all, no one should be left to pick up the pieces by themselves. Compassion, offered at the right moment, can mean the difference between sinking and surviving.

There are losses that defy language. Losses that turn the natural order of life inside out. To give birth in reverse, to move toward an ending rather than a beginning , is a sorrow almost too heavy to carry. It is a labour of love, and of unbearable grief. Silence echoing so loudly it becomes deafening.

Your support is not just a donation. It is a hand reached out in the darkest moment. It is a reminder that even in devastation, there is still care, still community, still hope.

Together, we can ensure that no one has to face their most painful chapter alone.

Gratitude

Thursday 15th Jan
Sometimes I wonder if we feel enough of it, you know gratitude? Like what does it even mean. I know there were periods in my life where I definitely didn’t have enough of it for others , for myself, for the gifts that this life offers us. This photo was taken the day we buried Laurie. My very good friend Debbie brought these balloons to her funeral and afterwards we set them free. I didn’t know she was planning this, I wasn’t really speaking very much or even hearing much around this time. And whilst it was one of the worst days of my life I will forever cherish this memory, Debbie, those balloons and this photo. For even in your darkest moments you may still be able to find some gratitude especially for those that held you up when you were ready to fall 💓

Tired and sore but back for more

Monday 12th Jan
Who knew trying to share your links on social media would be so hard. Had a few messages about about the link not working and I am not even sure what I am doing wrong. So although I only need to run 2k a day I have a habit of running more because well once I’’m running and especially running for this cause I tend to get lost in my thoughts. And despite being tired and sore I will keep coming back for more 💪

Raising awareness

Saturday 10th Jan
Sometimes doing these fundraisers is a little bit gut wrenching. I mean it’s really hard to talk about child loss/baby loss. People shy away from it for obvious reasons. It sits firmly in the unspoken, a resounding silence that for those who have experienced such a loss is quite deafening. So here we are trying to raise awareness for this charity with the memories of those we mourn to hopefully reduce future deaths. But they will never be eradicated for this is part of life. And so I suppose it is to ensure that there is support for those who may tragically walk this path themselves one day.  I am running for Laurie. And for those children whose lives ended far too soon. For the parents who will be lost in this. So that when they are ready to speak about their child there is someone there for them.

Saving babies lives

Monday 22nd Dec
Raising money to support this amazing charity who help countless bereaved parents. The statistics around baby loss and neonatal death in the UK is sadly far too high. This charity supports bereaved families and also funds vital research into preventing babies deaths.  There can be an echoing silence around baby/child loss. Hopefully you can support me in making some noise for this great cause 💕💕
