I am walking 100k steps for Sands in honour of my beautiful niece, Mannat Kaur Uppal,
In March, I am walking 100k steps for Sands in honour of my beautiful niece, Mannat Kaur Uppal, who was stillborn on 24th February 2023.
Mannat is the daughter of my sister in law, Dimple Kaur Uppal, and her husband, Gagan Singh Uppal. In 2023, they lost their little girl, a loss that shattered their world. Watching them break into pieces when they said goodbye to their daughter is something I will carry with me forever. A little girl was all they had dreamed of.
Mannat has one big brother, Tegh, who is 5, and a baby brother, Ekam, who has just turned 1. They will grow up knowing they have a sister. We will forever say her name. We will forever carry her with us.
In the South Asian community, baby loss is often treated as something to whisper about, something to hide. It is still seen as taboo. But losing a child is not something a family simply “moves on” from. It is a life altering tragedy. It changes you forever. The silence around it can make grieving parents feel even more alone.
I am walking 100k steps to honour Mannat, to support her parents, and to raise awareness that baby loss is real, devastating, and deserving of compassion and conversation.
