I’m running 2k a day in January for families facing baby loss

I’ve committed to running 2k a day this January for every much-loved baby sadly not here today.

Sands ensure that everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times. They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby. Anything you are able to donate means so much.

Thank you.

The “Why”

Thursday 8th Jan
Entering a new year you will always find the majority of people kick start their fitness goals. The “New Year New Me” fads creep in, and whilst they are taking the right steps towards wellness, I always hear comments with negative connotations. What we don’t often realise is that the majority of those people have their “Why” and it’s personal, they don’t need to share that.

However in my case, I’m sharing my “Why”.

Before I had my daughter I always loved running and exercise. It was escapism. The challenge, feeling stronger, physically, mentally, emotionally. However,  following her birth during Covid,  I went from surgery to surgery, feeling less and less like myself and letting anxiety take over.

It took me nearly 4 years to recover and feel in a place where I could think about having more children. And we starting trying, and kept trying, and kept trying. For 18 months we had negative tests until one day another line appeared.
I was in such shock I kept doing tests. Even when I’d had all the reassurance I kept doing them until symptoms came into force. For 3 months I was pregnant, happy and excited about our new chapter as a family.
Unfortunately, I lost that pregnancy. I had a silent miscarriage.  No warning, no worrying loss of symptoms, no instinct something was wrong.
It was a grief I couldn’t quite get my head around. Although it’s common, it felt unnatural and I felt so sad that I would never know who that soul would turn out to be.

I was fortunate to be able to put my baby to rest. The hospital gave me a scan picture with a delicately knitted figure: an angel. They also paid for a memorial service , which gave me the moment to say goodbye for now. They would have been due this month so I knew I needed something to help me make sense of their passing.

That’s my “why”.

In that pain and grief, someone somewhere was able to facilitate those moments for our family. I want to be able to raise money to help prevent baby loss in the first instance, but also provide those much needed moments to families that help them navigate through the grief that comes with losing a baby you already imagined your life with.

The 2k of running has given me a dedicated time of the day to switch off from the chaos of work and parenting. It’s a small moment of time I feel that little soul with me, so it’s really given me everything.
But I would really appreciate it if you could sponsor me so that together we could provide care to families who need it most.

Thank you x

Megan, this is such an incredible challenge and such an important cause. Running 2k every day for the whole of January is no small feat, and doing it to support a baby loss charity that gives families the care and understanding they so deeply need makes it even more meaningful. I’m so full of admiration for your strength, commitment, and compassion. Wishing you strong legs, steady motivation, and lots of support every step of the way 🤍
