I’m running 2k a day in January for families facing baby loss

I’ve committed to running 5k a day this January for every much-loved baby sadly not here today.

Sands ensure that everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times. They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby. Anything you are able to donate means so much.

Thank you.

My Sands Story

Monday 22nd Dec
Back in 2014 at the age of 21 Me and my then partner Katie discovered we were going to be having a baby, at first we were both very scared and I felt I was still too young to be having a child but as time went on we both grew into expecting parents and the excitement of bringing a little one into the world got bigger and bigger.  We were going for regular scans and everything was going great,  until we hit 20 weeks when we went for our scan and discovered our baby hadn't grown very much since the previous one, our lives changed within the space of a few weeks we went from; happiness around having a baby to what is going to happen and sheer panic, our story then took us to Liverpool Womens Hospital for a second opinion and this confirmed things were not going as expected.

On 15 January 2015 Charlie Thomas Edwards was born asleep. The single most heartbreaking experience i have ever faced, he was 1lb and fit in one hand had all his fingers and toes and even had my nose but it completely broke me, to the point I couldnt even talk to anyone about it, people knew about what had happened but I just couldnt voice words to explain it. For a number of years I entered a dangerous downward spiral of what was undiagnosed depression, resorted to drinking, and for large parts of the day sitting in a room and just stewing not communicating, even surrounded by family I was so lonely and didnt know what to do.

I discovered Sands through my sister who had asked if me and Katie wanted to do a local colour run 5k to raise some money for them in memory of Charlie. I got into running but only to train enough for a 5k, back in 2015 I could barely run a bath let alone 5k. I think I raised £250 then, which was a great achievement for a sponsored 5k event.

As time went on I started to read into the support which Sands offer and reached out for some help but because I wasn't personally carrying Charlie trying to find advice, guidance, what i can do to support my family, information was fairly none existent. With Sands I found all the right things and it provided a lot of comfort knowing its okay to feel a certain way, how its okay to tell people my baby died, i have never done this to get any sympathy from anyone but to let everyone my Son Charlie was Stillborn but Still Born, this was one of the reasons in 2019 i decided when I got in the London Marathon on a ballot place (which I applied for on a whim!) I was always going to raise money for Sands yet again, due to the covid pandemic and having my Second son Oliver, I didnt manage to complete this until 2022 fundraising through covid was hard and times were tough but I managed to raise a total of about £900.

In January Charlie will be 11 so I am doing this challenge with a little bit extra.... instead of running 2k a day i will doing 5k a day for all of January. I'm not particularly setting a goal for donations so if I raise £5, £50 or £500 i will be happy and proud of doing it! Sands is a very worthy cause and something very close to my heart.

Thank you for reading my story ❤️
