I’m running 2k a day in January for families facing baby loss

I’ve committed to running 2k a day this January for every much-loved baby sadly not here today.

Sands ensure that everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times. They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby. Anything you are able to donate means so much.

Thank you.

Our story

Saturday 27th Dec
Alongside the fact that this organisation is doing something truly incredible, I care deeply about supporting such a cause due to my own personal story.

I met my husband in 2010 and we both wanted to have a family. We assumed like anyone, it would happen easily and we would be a family within a year or so.
However each time we fell pregnant, we miscarried soon after. Months rolled by and the story didn’t change.

The NHS had completed the routine recurrent miscarriage tests and discharged us saying to just keep trying and we’ve just been unlucky.

We privately explored some other theories.
Countless appointments, referrals, tests and a few operations later we were seen again by a wonderful Consultant we’d got to know in St Peter’s EPU who’d seen us a few times.
She was sure we were missing something, even though all the routine screening tests had been checked off.

She took a blood test that same day, for genetic screening to investigate further even though it’s not routine to, which I will always be grateful for.

A while later she contacted us to say that my test had detected a Chromosomal Translocation on 4 chromosomes which is quite rare.
She explained that at fertilisation when the egg is produced it uses half of each chromosome at random like roulette and therefore unless the egg luckily had the unaffected half of each of those 4 chromosome, that the egg potentially won’t be viable.
My early miscarriages had always occurred at around 7 weeks, which is when the cells have started to duplicate and any abnormalities in the genetic make up of the embryo are detected.

Jackpot- we’d solved the mystery that had tormented us for the last few years.

We explored IVF on my own eggs first to see if by luck and chance we would find that one unaffected egg, but it didn’t work.

My sister decided to be screened and see if she had the same chromosomal translocation, and she didn’t.
She offered to be our egg donor which we went ahead with.
I now have 2 wonderful children, a girl almost 7 and a 5 year old boy which I count my blessings for every day.

I will always remember those years of yearning, grieving and trying to cling on to hope, our 7 miscarriages and the input and support from the various teams along the way on our fertility journey.

Any donation to this cause would be very much appreciated.
