I’m running 2k a day in January for families facing baby loss

I’ve committed to running 2k a day this January for every much-loved baby sadly not here today.

Sands ensure that everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times. They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby. Anything you are able to donate means so much.

Thank you.

On 13th Jan after my run my knee started to become unabreable to walk on, having visited A&E  had a X ray and MRI I've had confirmation I have given myself a stress fracture... so as much as I am not on the move much at the moment my incredible family and taking over the running and walking for Jan. The money raised is amazing!

So thanks to my cousin Will who is travelling the world and running between 2 & 5k a day. My Auntie who is logging 3k a day when she can and my brother in law who has done 2x 5ks to contribute- thank you.

This charity and the reason for why we are doing it is very much still there and how luckily am I that my family have stepped up when I literally cant do a step...

Thank you for every single donation it has meant the world.

Em & Chris' story - wrote by them

Thursday 1st Jan
After 11 months of trying to start our very own family, the time came to take a test and we were delighted to feel the warmth and excitement of the news a little one was on the way.

Life began to have a whole new outlook and we started to discuss and dream a life that would or could be with a child. A few weeks later, we received the heart wrenching news that it was an ectopic pregnancy. I knew what that was and what it meant, Chris unfortunately didn’t. We were then told that, due to how far along we were, I’d need surgery. Not one blow but two. Surgery went well but our world was shattered.

4 months later, I was late again. This time I felt fear and worry but tried to remain a tiny bit hopeful. 10 days later, I experienced the most horrendous pain. Another ectopic pregnancy but this time it had ruptured. A harrowing, life threatening experience that we wouldn’t wish upon anyone.

Two ectopic pregnancies in 4 months and I was now no longer able to convieve naturally. I was angry. Education taught us that having a baby was easy - too easy. I was 32 and felt I had wasted time starting a family because I thought that when the time was right we’ll have our baby.

IVF was our only option and hope. Three years later our IVF journey began. Feeling fortunate that this opportunity was available to us, we had a really amazing response and 12 embryos made the cut. 3 weeks later a positive test. Another 3 weeks later a scan. Then the third time we heard “I’m really sorry”.

We’d come accustom to this news.

We’re hopeful our time will come but there needs to be better education and awareness of pregnancy loss and early loss too. It’s traumatic. It leaves you feeling at fault when in most circumstances it’s inevitable. You’re told ‘it’s just bad luck’ which adds to the hopelessness.

We’ve been fortunate to have had the most amazing support from family, friends and colleagues.

But we’re not alone.

We talk openly. It helps but the right support is crucial for everyone going through this.
