I’m taking part in Sands Ribbon Run

I’ve committed to taking part in Sands Ribbon Run which takes place during Baby Loss Awareness Week (9-15 October) for every much-loved baby sadly not here today.

Sands ensure that everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times. They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby. Anything you are able to donate means so much.

Thank you.

£10 - could provide a hand and footprint kit to help create memories.

£20 - could provide a bereaved family with a memory box to help create and keep safe precious and lasting memories of their baby.

£35 - could answer a call from someone reaching out for support who has been through pregnancy loss or the death of a baby.

£100 - could help ensure every hospital in the UK has a dedicated Sands volunteer to help healthcare professionals access our training, guidance and support.

Why the Ribbon Run?

Monday 8th Sep
Earlier this year I decided I should finally give running a go before turning 35. I’ve never been into cardio (my head turns bright red and I was made fun of as a teen so that put a stop to any form of intense cardio exercise for me!) and always had slightly dodgy knees. Like many others, my journey started with the Couch to 5k app, with the first couple of runs being more of a walk than a run. I felt motivated and smashed through week 1…only to find out the following week that I was pregnant and I started suffering with morning sickness and fatigue. This continued for the entire first trimester, so I shelved the idea of Couch to 5k, thinking I might pick it up in the second trimester or even after birth.
Life happens, and at our 12 week scan we got the devastating news that our baby, although alive and growing, had anencephaly, which is sadly incompatible with postnatal survival . We had to make the heartbreaking decision to TFMR.  I still cannot find the words to describe the pain both my partner and I went through and the excruciating experience of having to go into hospital to induce labour at nearly 14 weeks to give birth to your baby that is no longer alive. The physical pain was awful, but it was the mental sadness and pain that was truly crushing. The NHS, as ever overwhelmed and understaffed, told me to reach out to SANDS - the wonderful charity I am now fundraising for. They provide information, support and an overall incredible service to any families dealing with baby loss in pregnancy.

The physical wounds have healed, and as hard as it is, life continues. We will never ever forget our baby who never knew anything but love, and I feel like I owe it to them and to myself to get back up and out and live life!

So…I’ve started back at square one with Couch to 5k and now have even more motivation through this fundraiser to train & cannot wait for race day on October 11th!

A close family member of mine went through devastating baby loss a mere month after myself, so I will be running in honour of their baby Robin too 💛

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us in this difficult time, and also a big thank you to everyone contributing to this fundraiser with donations and by sharing it! xxxx
