I’ve committed to taking on Winter Walk and walking 50k in December for every much-loved baby sadly not here today.
Sands ensure that everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times. They campaign for change, provide training for midwives and healthcare professionals, and support research so that fewer babies die and so that less families experience the tragedy of losing their baby. Anything you are able to donate means so much.

Thursday 27th NovThis December, I’m walking 50 kilometres.
It’s not a fitness challenge or a New Year resolution.
It’s something much deeper: a way to honour my daughter, to move through my grief one step at a time, and to raise money for a charity that is helping me survive the unimaginable.
Why I’m Walking
This year, my world changed forever. I lost my daughter.
There are no words big enough for that kind of loss. Grief isn’t just sadness – it’s shock, anger, emptiness, love with nowhere to go. It’s waking up every day and realising, again, that life will never be the same.
In the middle of that, I found support from a charity that has been there for me in ways I didn’t even know I needed. They’ve given me a safe space to talk, to cry, to remember, and to try and slowly put one foot in front of the other. Their work doesn’t take the pain away, but it makes it bearable. It reminds me I don’t have to carry this alone.
That’s why this December I’m committing to walk 50km – to say thank you, to raise awareness, and to help them be there for other families like mine.
Most days, grief makes everything feel heavy. Even getting out of bed can feel like a marathon.
Walking has become one of the few things that helps me breathe again. It’s simple, quiet, and gentle. There’s something grounding about feeling the pavement under my feet and the cold air on my face. With every step, I can think of my daughter, talk to her in my head, and let some of the pain move through me instead of sitting on my chest.
50km might not sound like a huge distance spread across a month, but when you’re grieving, everything takes more energy. This challenge isn’t about speed or performance. It’s about intention:
- Walking for her.
- Walking for me.
- Walking for others who are living with loss.
