I’m taking part in Sands Starlight Walk
I will be walking alongside some of my Boodles team mates as we want to help those affected by the loss of a baby to find the light in the dark.
I’m so glad that stillbirth has become such a widely discussed topic.
I was pretty much full term when my baby daughter Rachel-Eloise was stillborn in May 2007 and at that time, the stigma surrounding the subject was highly prevalent. The company I worked for during my pregnancy, initially offered support. However, as time went on they began to display a distinct lack of understanding.
My maternity leave was 6 months of anguish and turmoil as opposed to the joyful period we assume we will have following our pregnancy.
Thankfully, awareness in the workplace of Stillbirth and Neonatal death has improved greatly over the past decade and I’m extremely fortunate to now work for a brand who not only has shown support to me personally, but who are supportive of our team decision to have SANDS as our chosen charity of 2024.
S.A.N.D.S. were a huge support to me when I needed it the most.
The room I recovered in at Burnley Hospital was donated by the charity where I was able to spend time with my daughter in the hours following her delivery, enabling me to try to come to terms with the horrendous loss. A loss which was life changing and still almost 18 years later, evokes grief which comes from nowhere, knocking me off my feet when I least expect it.
S.A.N.D.S. provide support and advice at a time where nothing makes sense and had it not been for them I’m not sure where I would be now.
On Sunday 24th November, we will walk 12km in memory of Rachel, but also in memory of all the babies born sleeping.

Our beautiful first grandchild, Finn, lived for eight days before doctors advised the damage done during the delays in second stage of labour experienced by him and his Mummy meant he would never be able to survive without life support. Finn’s Mummy and Daddy had to take the heart-rending decision to turn off Finn’s life support on 1st July 2021. We love you to the moon and back, Finn. 💙✨
