15k Run for Sands
On Saturday 12th October, I will be participating in a 15K run to raise money for Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society).
During our 12-week scan, we were made aware that our baby had excess amniotic fluid and that it only had a 30% chance of survival. After further tests, we were given heartbreaking news. Our baby was diagnosed with Edward's Syndrome, a rare and serious genetic condition which only affects 1 in 8000 pregnancies. Further tests revealed a severe heart defect and a large cystic hygroma, indicators of the challenges our little one was facing. After many agonizing conversations with our doctors, we discovered our baby would unlikely complete the pregnancy and would not survive the birth. We made the heart-wrenching decision to terminate the pregnancy for medical reasons. It was the most difficult choice we have ever had to make, but it was made out of love and the desire to spare our baby from suffering.
While in hospital, I needed to keep myself busy so here is my page explaining our story. Even though our story is 1 in 8000, miscarriages happen to 1 in 4 women. This run is to help me to stay focused and to think of a more positive future but I also want more women to talk about their experiences so it becomes less of a taboo topic.
I really hope our story did not upset anyone or bring up any painful memories. I am more than happy to share our story as I want a more open culture so women can remember their little angels with a smile.
P.S- Since we have smashed my target of £150, Rob said he will run it too now!
