Why I’m walking a 100km in March..
Last year, during our second trimester, we found out our baby wasn’t well.
We went to additional scans, we had blood tests, we faced agonising waits. We were given choices, that didn’t feel like choices at all. Eventually, we were told by doctors that our daughter’s diagnosis was fatal - we were told that whenever our daughter was born, she wouldn’t be well enough to survive.
Our daughter joined us peacefully on 28.04.24, and will forever be a part of us.
Our hearts were broken and we faced tough days as we entered the underworld of baby loss - no parent expects to end their pregnancy journey discussing their baby’s funeral arrangements.
I know discussing death feels uncomfortable for many people, and talking about baby death even more so (I try to do my bit to break the taboo - but I often find it tough too). We were lucky to receive the support of the most amazing team of bereavement midwives - words fail me when I try to explain how humbled I am by the work they and others like charities such as Sands do every day to support bereaved families, and give parents a safe space during a time that can often feel isolating and lonely!
This March, I’m walking 100km to give a little something back by helping to raise money for the amazing work Sands do to make sure everyone affected by the loss of a baby gets the support they need and deserve when facing the toughest of times.
